The Global Health Council's 2009 Photo Contest


2008 Photo Contest Finalist Z. WilsonThe Global Health Council's Photography Contest is dedicated to drawing attention to health issues that have a global impact and to celebrate this year's conference theme,
New Technologies + Proven Strategies = Healthy Communities.

Amateurs and professionals alike are invited to submit selections of their work which clearly illustrate the theme of the Council's conference, as well as its core issues of women's health, child health, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS and emerging health threats. In particular, members working in the field are highly encouraged to share success stories.

The winner will be invited to display their work at the Council's 36th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. and will appear in Global Health Council publications and electronic media.

Dear colleagues,

Please find attached an announcement of the "Citizens Ambassadors to the United Nations" campaign, which encourages people everywhere to engage with world leaders and decision-makers by uploading video messages on the UN YouTube channel.

World citizens are asked to record an online video to respond to the question, "If you had the opportunity to speak to world leaders, what would you say?", and upload their video to YouTube, marking it as a reply to the Secretary-General's video on the UN YouTube channel. The five best video entries will be selected and the finalists invited to UN Headquarters in New York for UN Day (24 October), where they will have their photograph taken with the Secretary-General and enjoy VIP seating at the UN Day concert.

Please promote this initiative with your partners to encourage as many people as possible to participate, in particular youth. The campaign will run only from 23 September to 10 October, leaving only 17 days for citizens to upload their videos to YouTube.

Here are some ways you can promote the campaign:

Send the announcement to media and NGO contacts.
Translate the announcement into local languages and post it on your website.
Embed the YouTube videos by the Secretary-General and other celebrities on your website, so that site visitors can view the message without having to go to YouTube.
Add a small banner -- which we will sending to you shortly -- to your website homepage with a link to the UN YouTube channel.
Promote the campaign heavily through your Twitter and Facebook accounts, and other social networking tools.
Post the announcement at local schools, universities and other educational establishments.
